Elmina castle is the Oldest European edifice in existence south of the Sahara and the first trading post built on the golf of Guinea.
It was first built as a trade settlement in Gold Coast at the time of barter trade between the Gold Coasters and the Portuguese but later became one of the most important stops on the route of Trans Atlantic slave trade.

On 19th January, 1482,Portuguese explorers, led by Don Diego de Azambuja, arrived at Cape Three Points, the southern most part of Gold Coast (Now Ghana).
They had set sail from Lisbon, Portugal and brought with them timber, stone and other building materials which they used to build their own castle, about hundred meters away.

The name given to the castle was Sao Jorge Da Mina or St George's Castle in English.
The local people could hardly mention the castle's name, soon they began to call it 'El mina' .
Today, Elmina remains the name of the town and the castle is now known as the Elmina Castle.
