Africa Education Watch (AFW) is asking the government and the Ghana Education Service, when are they going to distribute textbooks for teachers and pupils in the service, after rolling out the new curriculum for primary and kindergarten schools somewhere 2019.
In addition, the Education Policy Research and Advocacy Organization is surprised about parents silence over such a very a critical issue, that should have prompted them to act accordingly, by keeping the government and the education service on their toes to supply textbooks and teaching learning materials, for the successful implementation of the programme.
The New Standard Curriculum was introduced by the Ghana Education Service in August, 2019 for kindergarten and primary schools across the country, of which workshop was organized for teachers and head teachers. Even though the new curriculum is very good in terms of teaching and learning, teachers lack the materials needed to fully implement the programme.
In the year 2020, the government promised to supply textbooks and teaching and learning resources, but that is yet to materialise as school reopens on Monday 18th January, 2021 without textbooks and resources.
Meanwhile, according to the Ghana Education Service, teachers are to use the first 8 weeks on the academic calendar to do recovery learning as a result of pupils long stay as home due to the novel Covid-19.
"We are entering the 2nd year after the new primary sch curriculum was launched. Teachers still don’t have textbooks, yet, we expect them to do magic & catch up for the 2 term COVID learning loss. Parents too are silent . Should we should hit the streets?" This was posted on their social media handle yesterday.
