In Ghana, a lot of the traditional fabric we sew and wear have meanings. Traditionally, this is the practice of the Akans, from kingship to marriage, the kind of fabric they wear speaks volume. Every occasion determines the kind of cloth to wear. For example, during funerals, you see many wearing clothes inscribed in it, "who do you leave me behind", "a good mother" among many others.
The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Mrs Jean Mensah wore a similar cloth as she sat down to declare the presidential results as the returning officer of the commission. Madam Jean has won the admiration of many Ghanaians including presidential candidates like Sofo Kyiri Abosom and Akua Donkor in addition to election observes like Coalition Of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO) for the competence shown.
A gentleman named ChristDeKing on Twitter has explained the meaning of the chairperson's Kente fabric.He said:
"The Kente fabric the EC chairwoman Jean Mensah wore today is called Nyankonton(God's eye or Rainbow). It signifies beauty and uniqueness. The EC chairwoman exploring beauty with brain in a unique way."
